I read an article yesterday about a friend and the risks that he’s taken in his life. The level of risk taking is different for everyone. As we take more or bigger risks, our tolerance or resilience increases. Just as a kid would not start swimming by jumping off the high dive, we all need to start in the shallow end. Some of us may progress faster than others, but I think it is relative to how much risk and challenges we’ve faced in our past.
We all need resilience in our lives. Life is unpredictable, and the more resilience we have, the better we can weather life’s storms. So how do we build our resilience? Do we need to take risks? It depends on what you consider a risk? You can start small by taking a cold shower or take a bigger risk by quitting a job that no longer serves you? However, building resilience is more than putting yourself out there, it’s building up a strong and healthy body and mind. The healthier your body is, the easier it is to overcome a cut or a broken bone. The stronger your mind, the less affected you are by a rude comment. All these things add up, and the body and mind are not isolated from each other. Everything is connected.
Does having a healthy diet vitalize your body or mind? Body you might say initially, but it’s both, isn’t it? What about sleep, exercise, or meditation? All of our systems are connected internally, and influenced by the outside world. Our environment can be very supportive or detrimental. It’s up to us to choose. Designing your daily routine gives you the opportunity to build your resilience and strength, physically and mentally.
So, do you take risks, or are you strengthening your resilience by trying new things, even if you are not sure of the outcome? Take the risks, big or small, and try something new. Live your life. Step out into the unknown, and see where life takes you.
